Cycle training for all ages this summer at the Road Safety Centre

Whether it’s your first bike, you’re a cyclist in Cardiff or an adult who’s itching to get back in the saddle there is a course for all! Improve your safety, practical riding skills and knowledge of the Highway Code before you get on your bike.

Holiday classes teaching youngsters how to cycle safely around Cardiff’s roads are about to take place in the coming months. The Road Safety Centre at Briardene on North Road have classes from 10am until 12 noon from March 31st to April 4th, July 21st to 25th, July 28th to August 1st and August 4th  to the 8th.

This course is free of charge and is open to children aged nine years and above who own a bicycle and helmet (the latter is available to purchase at the Centre). The course includes basic practical riding skills, knowledge of the Highway Code, simple cycle maintenance and advice on the wearing of correct protective clothing.

For more information or to reserve a place for a child please contact the road safety centre on 029 2061 9907/8.

For adults the one-day course at the centre on North Road is aimed at developing more cycling skills and is ideal for those who have not ridden for some time but are keen to commute by bike or to cycle with their children.

The morning session will be spent learning important road-craft and theories including practical riding skills, knowledge of the Highway Code, basic cycle checks and advice on the wearing of protective equipment. The afternoon session, depending on cycling ability, will include time on the Taff Trail and a variety of on-road routes.

The courses will run on the first Saturday of most months from April to September from 10am to 4pm, beginning on Saturday April 5th. Courses will only run if there are adequate numbers. Lunch is not provided.

Participants will be required to bring a roadworthy bicycle that is suitable for their own size. Following health and safety advice, the wearing of a cycle helmet is strongly recommended.

The course is free but a booking fee of £5 (refundable on the day) is required from all trainees.

For further information concerning the courses, please contact Germaine Walsh at the Road Safety Centre on 029 2061 9907 or email: gwalsh@cardiff.gov.uk
